Why Pediatric Eye Exams Matter

Did you know that 80% of early learning is visual? From the moment they are born, children explore, develop, and understand the world around them through their sense of sight. If a child is struggling to see clearly, it doesn't just affect their vision—it can deeply impact their reading, academic performance, hand-eye coordination, and confidence.

Many common childhood vision conditions have no obvious symptoms, meaning children rarely complain because they assume everyone sees the world the way they do. Routine pediatric eye exams ensure your child has the vital visual resources they need to grow, learn, and thrive.

Recommended Milestones: When Should Kids See the Eye Doctor?

👶 Infant Screening (6 to 12 Months)

Even before they learn their ABCs, babies are rapidly developing tracking and depth perception. Dr. Graziano-Shively checks infant eyes for proper alignment, healthy eye muscle function, and basic structural development.

🧸 Toddler Care (Age 3)

As your child becomes more active, we perform non-verbal, interactive vision tests. At this stage, we look closely for early signs of conditions like strabismus (crossed eyes) or amblyopia (lazy eye), which are highly treatable when caught early.

✏️ School-Ready Exams (Age 5+)

Before they head off to kindergarten, a comprehensive eye exam is essential. School vision screenings only catch a fraction of vision problems—our thorough exams check focusing flexibility, binocular vision, and overall eye health to ensure they are ready for the classroom.

We move at your child's pace, ensuring they feel safe, comfortable, and completely at ease throughout their entire visit.

Signs Your Child May Need an Eye Exam

Keep an eye out for these subtle indicators that your child might be struggling with an undiagnosed vision issue:

  • Frequent eye rubbing or excessive blinking

  • Squinting, tilting their head, or closing one eye to focus

  • Sitting unusually close to the TV or holding tablets right up to their face

  • Losing their place, skipping lines, or using a finger to guide them while reading

  • Unexplained headaches, fatigue, or avoiding reading and homework
